  • Is the Beagle a great family dog?
    • Yes, the beagle is a great family dog; our two previous beagles actually helped teaching our son how to walk.
  • Is the Beagle great with children?
    • Yes, if the Beagle is not in the mood for socialising with children, it simply walks away.
    • Do not let small or younger children walk around with food in their hands, as it is too tempting for a food-loving Beagle.
    • Never leave children (aged 10-12 years or younger) alone with dogs without adult supervision.
  • Can I have a Beagle if I’m not interested in hunting or tracking?
    • Yes you can. The Beagle is a scent hound and loves to use its nose and brain. However, not all Beagles enjoy tracking or hunting, so instead you can take the dog for a walk in the forest or on the beach.
  • Can the Beagle be left home alone?
    • Yes, most dogs can, as the dog does not know, if is has been left alone for two minutes or two hours.
    • Begin the home-alone-training with limited time periods, and slowly increase the time periods with 5-10-20-40-60 minutes.
    • Only a small percentage of dogs can not be left home alone.
  • Does the Beagle needs a lot of exercise?
    • Not necessarily, as the Beagle will get used to whatever exercise it gets. Like most people the Beagle will love exercise and new scents, as the Beagle is an energetic dog.
    • A well-exercised dog will also be more active at home.
  • Male or female?
    • A male dog is more likely to play like puppies throughout its whole life.
    • A female dog (bitch) will come into season about every sixth months. The female dog will become easier to erase after 1-2 seasons.

  • How about food?
    • You should not let the food dish stand all day long, as you might risk an over weighted Beagle.
    • Be careful when placing food on the dinner table, as the Beagle is an expert on stealing food from the table, even when supervised.
    • As the dog owner, only you can decide what and how much the Beagle should eat. Otherwise the Beagle can eat itself to death.

  • The Beagle together with other animals?
    • The Beagle can easily be put together with other animals.
We had a rabbit once ourselves, but it was only let loose with the dogs when strongly supervised.
    • The Beagle will tell cats, that they do not belong in your garden. However, your Beagle will accept kittens, if the dog has been raised with cats / kittens from the beginning.
    • Never let your Beagle alone with other animals without supervision as the Beagle is a hunting dog.
  • Tracking?
    • Most Beagles love tracking, as the Beagle originally is born and bred to chase hares and rabbits. Today most Beagles are bred as happy family dogs.
    • You can read more about the subject Tracking here.
  • Shows / Exhibition?
    • Not all people are born pretty and the same goes for Beagles.
    • If you participate in shows / exhibitions, please remember that you arrive and leave with the same dog whatever the results in the show ring.
    • It is the wish of every breeder to see a puppy in the show ring. In this way the breeder can see the results of the breeding programme.
  • Does my garden needs to have a fence, if I have a Beagle?
    • Yes, your garden needs to be fenced, although it is possible to keep the Beagle in the garden without a fence. However, this calls for a lot of training and attention.
    • The fence needs to have a minimum height of 90 centimetres (at least five feet high), however you only need a height of 60 centimetres, if you have a surrounding hedge behind the fence.
    • Please make sure, that all gaps at the bottom are fully covered in order to keep the fence in place. This is called Beagle Security.
    • It is possible to have a Beagle without it runs away, but this calls for love and consequence. Let the Beagle know the boundaries of the area, but don’t say anything to the dog if it’s only 20 centimetres off the ground (you need to set the limits).

  • How about Beagle bitches becoming into season?
    • DO NOT use season pants, as you prevent the female dog from learning how to keep itself clean during the season period.
    • Female puppies typically become into season for the first time aged 8-12 months.
    • The first time the Beagle bitch becomes into season, she does not know what it is. Blood stains will be on the floor, but she will soon learn how to keep herself clean during the periods.
    • Beware of beagle bitches in their season period. Around the 10 - 16th day the beagle may a bit more clever and try to run away to find a mate.
  • Leash????.
    • Always keep your Beagle and other dogs on a leash when you walk the dog. If you walk the dog without a leash, other people can fear what might happen.
    • Use some of the specific dog forests in Denmark. It is allowed here to take the dog for a walk without a leash. However, never let your Beagle off the line unless you are 100 per cent sure, that you can call the dog back and it will come.
    • See the dog forests on the following links Fuji's or at Friluftskortet.
    • Reel leash or normal leash with different lengths (used in obedience classes).
  • Puppies.
    • How soon can my Beagle bitch get puppies?
      • Our Beagle bitches get mated for the first time aged 2½-3 years and when they have been showed at least two times. The bitches should be built up before having the first litter.
    • How late can my Beagle bitch get puppies?
      • If one of our Beagle bitches is having her first litter, she should be 4 years old at the latest. She should not be more than 7½ years old, when having the last litter of her life.
    • How about using a breeder name?
      • If you have bought a Beagle puppy from us, and you would like your Beagle bitch to get puppies, you are allowed to use our breeder name. However, we want to decide the choice of the male Beagle (father) of the litter, since it is our breeder name afterall.
  • House / Flat / Apartment.
    • Can I have a Beagle in my apartment / flat?
      • Yes, you can have a Beagle in your apartment / flat, but please be aware of the fact, that the Beagle needs a lot more exercise than a Beagle living in a house. You may not have a garden when living in a flat / an apartment.
    • Do I need to live in a house to have a Beagle?
      • No, it is not necessary for you to live in a house, but it is highly recommended, as your Beagle will have a garden to play in.
  • Housetraining
    • Is the Beagle easy to housetrain?
      • You need to make an effort in order to housetrain your Beagle. Toileting times: As soon the puppy wakes up in the morning or after a quick nap. After a meal. After play / exercise. Every two hours throughout the day. Before putting the puppy to bed.
      • A puppy from one the litters from our kennel was housetrained already 8 days after arriving to the new home. The owner made a great effort in order to get the puppy housetrained. Most puppies in general come with some housetraining, but it may take a while before your puppy is properly housetrained. Remember: Practise makes perfect!
